Action Research is a process that emphasizes change (action) and understanding (research). When what we intend to occur does not match what actually occurs in the classroom, we can use this cycle of action and reflection to improve our practices. Harnessing the Power of Red Ink

Have you ever struggled after reading a student paper to figure out what kind of comment you should write? Have you debated whether to use red or blue ink to grade a paper? If you answered "yes" to either of these questions, you'll want to attend this TLC presentation. Laura Lease and Tracy Constantine will lead a discussion of existing scholarship on writing comments and will offer a peek at the results of their Red Ink Survey of more than 3,000 Durham Tech students.

Basic CD Burning

As new (and re-assigned) computers arrive on (and under) our desks so does the ability to “burn” CD’s. This class will provide an introduction to the process of creating a compact disk (CD). These high capacity disks provide the ability to back up large amounts of data, make copies of valuable disks (archive copies), and many other uses.

The Sublime: Ornamentation in Islamic Art and Architecture

How does a tradition that shuns the depiction of creation manage to express the presence of God so effectively in its artwork? In a time when we are overly subjected to negative news images coming out of the Middle East, you can come see a presentation by Liz Penton on Islamic art and architecture. Learn about the three major forms of ornamentation and how to comprehend them.

Across the country, universities and colleges are using plagiarism services to stem the rising tide of academic dishonesty. The most popular and effective service is turnitin.com. As of Fall Semester 2004 all instructors in Instructional Services have access to this valuable resource. This workshop will address the basics of the system and how instructors can use the service in their courses. (repeat of earlier workshop)

Sherry Sherrill will be discussing examples of workplace skills that students could include in an electronic career portfolio. "I Can't Believe You Asked Me That": A Panel Presentation on Better Ways to Conduct Interviews

This panel discussion will include employment legal experts and experienced human resource specialists who will share with faculty and staff the most successful and legally appropriate interviewing techniques including topics such as creating appropriate interview questions, legal limitations, and affirmative action compliance. This session will also provide an excellent opportunity to address faculty concerns about providing references for their students who are seeking employment.

Another workshop during this event will offer information about the place of the Middle College on the Community College campus.

How can we supply all of our students with the information we want them to have without killing more trees? Instructional CD’s can contain all of the handouts we may want our students to have. The structure and contents of these disks will be discussed as well as how to have these disks duplicated for students.

Bringing up Difficult Issues in the Classroom

Managing classroom discussion can be a challenge, especially when dealing with topics that are emotionally charged. One option is to skip such discussions, but other choices do exist. Come hear about (and share) methods you can use to facilitate educationally sound discussions in areas where "angels" may "fear to tread."

Get on the right track by using our Instructor's Job Seeking Toolkit, a set of resource materials that will enable you to teach industry standard resume, and cover letter preparation, and presentation techniques. Take the mystery out of teaching and evaluating resumes, discover critical information on scannable resumes and using keywords, and identify additional support services on campus to assist instructors and students.

Mary Moore is the Hope VI Project Coordinator, HRD Instructor and a Corporate Trainer with Durham Technical Community College. Skilled in Workplace Development, she utilizes her HR and Recruiting background to help dislocated workers strengthen job search strategies and explore new career paths.
