The Spanish Conversation hour offers informal conversation time with native and non-native Spanish speakers in a comfortable setting. Appropriate for all levels. Group facilitator will lead the discussion, and attendees will have the opportunity to participate and/or to simply listen.

Retaining Students in Your Hybrid Classes

This workshop briefly defines and illustrates the Hybrid Mode of Instruction. Exploring the concern of retention in this relatively new form of Instruction at the Community College level is another goal of the workshop. Participants should expect to reflect on retention research and review techniques to successfully retain and engage students in Hybrid courses.

Faces of the Future – A Comparison of Hispanic Credit and Non-Credit Students at DTCC

Participants will learn the primary motivators of credit and non-credit Hispanic students based on recent survey data. What do they look like in terms of age, sex, and educational background? Why are they at Durham Tech? What do they hope to accomplish while they are here? What's the number one reason they chose Durham Tech? What does this data tell us about how we're serving them before they reach the classroom and afterwards? Answers to these questions and more!

Roundtable: Facilitating and Evaluating Online Discussions

There are so many different ways that faculty use Blackboard's Discussion Board feature in online, hybrid and traditional classes. At this session, instructors are invited to share creative prompts they've used to start active and engaging online discussions. We'll also share tips for managing online conversations and for evaluating participation. Whether you have a lot, a little or no experience using discussion boards with students, we hope you'll come ready to learn, share and brainstorm with your colleagues.

What did faculty say about students based on CCFSSE results? What did students say about faculty based on CCSSE results? Many of you took and administered surveys of engagement in the Spring of 2005. The results have been analyzed and you may be surprised at some of the gaps the results reveal. Join us for a lively discussion of the survey findings, along with best practices from DTCC and other community colleges. You will leave with practical ideas for how to help our students be more successful in and outside of the classroom.

Come On! You Can Do It! Learn to Teach and Assess Writing in Non-English Courses

Do you ever say to yourself, "What can I reasonably expect from my students in terms of writing? This isn't an English class, after all!" Or, "I have my students write papers because I know 'I'm supposed to,' but I don't really know how to grade them. I just...sort of...grade on effort." Well, this workshop is for you! Come learn more from our multidisciplinary panel about successfully constructing and assessing writing assignments for your non-English courses.

Engaging Adult Learners in an Academic In-group

Students enrolled in a course constitute a social group. There is substantial psychological research to suggest that certain group characteristics can make group functioning more successful. This session will provide an overview of this new theory and an opportunity for your comments on it.

What is ACA 111 and how can it help Durham Tech students be successful?

ACA 111 is one of four Achieving the Dream initiatives and has the potential to significantly improve student success at Durham Tech and beyond. But what actually happens in the classroom? How are students learning strategies for success? How can this class help students in other college coursework? What do we already know about students in the three ACA 111 sections this semester? This TLC presentation will answer these questions and more with an informal discussion of the course’s objectives and its relationship with other AtD initiatives.

Do you hear students proclaim their disdain for classes they perceive as irrelevant to their educational or career goals, e.g., “Why do I have to take this class? I’ll never use this stuff?” In this session we’ll discuss ideas that involve linking course material with student interests in an effort to change this particular student perception. Bring your ideas! Participants will complete one specific example from physics and math that links optics and geometry with painting and art history. Bring a pencil and paper. Other materials will be provided.

Teaching and Learning Through Inquiry

Inquiry-guided learning promotes learning through students' active investigation of questions, problems, and issues, often for which there is no one answer. In this session, we will actively explore how teaching and learning through inquiry differs from traditional methods including key learning outcomes, teaching methods, and assignments. Virginia Lee, Ph.D. is an independent consultant. Previously she was Associate Director, Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning at NC State, where she led a campus-wide inquiry-guided learning initiative. For several years she taught part-time as a psychology instructor in Durham Tech's College Transfer Program.

ACERIMA: Journey to a US Education
Collins Building, room 201    2-3:30 p.m.       O’Malley

This simulation exercise is designed to sensitize participants to the difficulties that international students encounter in their quest for a U.S. American education. It acquaints the participants with the procedures students must follow from the initial contact with a U.S. educational institution to their arrival on campus. A facilitated discussion takes place after the simulation to address the specific issues at stake.
