Active and Cooperative Learning
With funding from a grant from the Carl D. Perkins Foundation,
the Teaching-Learning Center sponsored this workshop by Dr. Richard
Felder of North Carolina State University on April 26, 2002. The workshop focused on Active learning, “activities that engage
students in doing something besides listening to a lecture and taking
notes to help them learn and apply course material,” and Cooperative
learning, or “involving students in interacting with one another under
conditions that require positive interdependence, individual accountability,
face-to-face interaction, appropriate use of interpersonal skills,
and regular self-assessment of group functioning.”
Drs. Felder offered a variety of active and cooperative
learning ideas and guidelines, as well a comprehensive list
of references on cooperative learning.
