When I try to log in, I get an error message.

If you cannot log in, then most likely you are using the wrong user name or password (or both).

Specific error messages you might see when logging in

Could not login. Valid authentication credentials were not provided.
This error means that you are using an incorrect password. Please note:

  • When your Blackboard account was initially created, your password was set to the last 4 digits of your SSN. However, if at any time in the past you changed your password, it remains whatever you set it to. Try using a password you are likely to have chosen.
  • Passwords are case sensitive.
  • You can use the "Forgot password" link (found on the screen where you enter your user name and password). This will email you instructions for changing your password--but it works only if you have previously recorded a correct email address in Blackboard.

An error occurred while the system was processing this login request.
This error means that you are using an invalid user name. Please note:

  • Your user name is based on the name that you registered under this semester.
  • Your user name is your last name + first initial + last 2 digits of SSN
  • Most students register for classes using their SSN. If you used another number instead (e.g. if DTCC assigned you another number instead of your SSN), then use THAT number for determining your user name.
  • There are no spaces, hyphens, apostrophes or other symbols in user names.

Example: If a person registered under the name Jane Baker-Smith, with SSN xxx-xx-xx34, then her Blackboard user name would be bakersmithj34

When I log in, I don't see my current classes listed.

In general, your classes become visible in Blackboard on the first day of class--and not before! Please try logging in on or after the first day of class, and you should see your classes listed. (See the academic calendar to find out when classes begin for a particular semester.)

Please note: Each instructor chooses when his/her course will become visible to students. Some instructors wait several days into the semester before making their Blackboard courses visible to students. If you log in on the first day of the semester and do not see all of your classes listed, it is very likely that your instructors have not made those classes visible yet to students. Please check with your instructors to find out when they will make their Blackboard course sites available.

If you register during Late Registration (also know as "Drop/Add"), your classes will not become visible to you until the day after the Late Registration period ends. Usually this is the third or fourth day of the semester.

Also, if your instructor is not using Blackboard, then you won't see that class listed in Blackboard. Please check with your instructor to find out if he/she is using Blackboard.

You can contact Instructional Computing if you need additional assistance.

Why do I have to log in twice?

If you login fails on the first try, but works on the second, then you are starting your login from the wrong screen. (You are going directly to the screen where you enter your user name and password.)

To solve this problem, always begin your login from this screen:
http://blackboard.durhamtech.edu

And then click the LOGIN button to move to the next screen (where you enter your user name and password). Then, your login will work on the first try!

Why do I still see classes from past semesters?

Your classes from last semester may still be visible when a new semester begins. These "old" classes should "disappear" within a week or two of the start of a new semester.

I still see classes that I dropped. Can I get rid of them?

After you drop a class, the instructor will need to "remove" you from the roster in Blackboard in order for the class to no longer appear when you log in. Contact the instructor and ask him/her to remove you from the course in Blackboard.
