Problems for *some* IE7 users
Microsoft officially released Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) in late 2006. Depending on your Windows version and settings, IE7 may install itself on your computer as part of the normal Windows Update process.
Some users have experienced these problems using IE7 with Blackboard:
- In the Discussion Board, after clicking "Add Thread" or "Reply", the box where you are supposed to type your message does not appear.
- In tests or quizzes that have one or more "essay" type question, the boxes where you are supposed to type answers do not appear.
- Scrolling through a test is extremely slow.
- Log in works fine on some computers but not others.
Solutions
There are several options for Internet Explorer 7 users who encounter the above problems:
Option 1: Use a different web browser
If you access Blackboard using Netscape or Firefox instead of Internet Explorer, you will not encounter the problems listed above. We recommend Firefox, because it is a good, secure browser that is free and easy to download and install. See http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
Option 2: Turn off the Text Box Editor
Blackboard's Text Box Editor provides tools for formatting text in discussion board postings and in essay questions on tests/quizzes. It is available only to Internet Explorer users and is responsible for many of the problems listed above. Luckily, it is easy to turn off the text box editor, which may help you avoid lots of problems.
Follow these steps to turn off the text box editor:
- Login and get to Blackboard Welcome screen that lists all of your courses. (If already in Blackboard, click the green "Blackboard Home" tab to get to Welcome screen.)
- In the TOOLS box, click "Personal Information/Password"
- Click "Set Text Box Editor Options"
- Select UNAVAILABLE
- Click SUBMIT, then click OK two times.
- Exit the browser. You must get completely OUT of Internet Explorer for the change to take effect.
